Daylight savings time again

I can live in hope that this one passes!! I hate hate hate the twice a year time changes and freely bitch about them each time. My critters haven't a clue why the schedule changes with no apparent reason. Heck, even my new car hasn't a clue how to deal with DST. Thank you, Ford.

"AUSTIN – An effort to ditch daylight saving time in Texas could end up getting more than just 15 minutes of fame.

The House is scheduled to vote on Friday on a bill by Rep. Dan Flynn, R-Van, that would eliminate the seasonal time changes. Under the proposal, Texas would fall back to standard time in November – and stay there.

'Let’s go back to ‘Texas time’ or ‘God’s time,’ however you want to say it,' Flynn said this week.

Flynn earned national media attention this year for his idea, which he admitted came to him when he couldn’t figure out how to change his car’s clock after a recent time change.

He’s blasted the time changes as outdated and unnecessary. He’s cast them as dangerous, citing reports that they cause traffic accidents and increase heart attacks. And he’s sought to dispel the notion that daylight saving time is important to farmers and ranchers.

'The bottom line is that a rooster or a cow, they don’t know what a clock says,' he said.

But with all the weighty topics that lawmakers must address in a 140-day session, many figured the clock would just run out on Flynn’s idea.

A House committee, however, quietly approved the proposal late last month. And with just over three weeks left in the session, there could be enough time for the House and Senate to make Texas join Hawaii and most of Arizona in not observing daylight saving time.

Flynn said one sticking point had been whether Texas should forever spring forward or permanently fall back. But it turns out he didn’t really have a choice, since federal law on uniform time outlines just a state’s ability to disregard daylight saving time.

Since I don't have school age children, but do care about school children, I'd rather not have DST. Having those school buses picking up kids when it's pitch black outside seems a needless hazard. Our daughter lives in Arizona and they don't have it. I think we're now 2 hours in time difference from Arizona. However, her kids have an hour bus trip to school and it is dark when they're picked up.

Back when I was working in the 3 Piece Suit world I liked DST. When I got
involved in Oil & Gas work I liked DST.

I was still working this place hard, cattle, horses, fences, brush hogging, etc.
That extra hour of evening light made a big difference.

Now, I can live with it either way.

I'll never forget that old farmer (from central casting) on the anti-DST TV ads back in the 1960s.
He was wearing a straw hat and bib overalls and holding a pitchfork.
He said the extra hour of daylight would burn up his crops.

Standard time sucks! I hate it being dead dark by 5:30 PM. If this idiot bill had passed part of it was that TX would be on Eastern time. Prime time TV would have started at 8 PM and the news at 11. We had that in CA and it was awful. I'm really glad that bill failed.

If they are going to stick us with standard time year round, then we need to change the standard work day from 8-5 to 7-4.

An idiot state rep causes all this commotion because he can't figure out how to program his car's clock? And people wonder why legislators are held in such low regard...

I blame our ever going on stupid DST on too many non Texans coming into the state in the first place.

The concept of changing us to Eastern time was just plain stupid. Time zone has nothing to do with DST in the long run.

I dislike changing clocks twice a year. The idea that moving time back and forth gives us extra daylight at the end of the day always amused me as a kid and still does.

The major irritation is not changing the damned clocks. It's the 6 weeks after the time change of screwed up sleeping, animals who don't understand why their schedule has changed, daylight and dark being "off", meal schedules changing, etc. For those of us who have very strong internal clocks the time changes are indescribably disruptive. They are probably physiologically disruptive for everyone but some aren't aware of it.

Wow, those are some really touchy animals. I have no farming experience so didn't know they could be so cantankerous. Just know that the time change has never affected my cat' s, nor my wife's sleeping schedule. And I REALLY HATE going back to standard time.

I dislike dst because it was create out of thin air to solve a problem that existed in some peoples minds. The transportation industry wanted dst 50+ years ago, because some states practiced dst and it caused them scheduling issues. I think my 10 year old niece could solve that problem with an app she could find for free, so that becomes a non issue.

What does DST have to do with picking up kids in the darkness? DST kicks in when the days are longer, not shorter. DST creates an extra hour of darkness in the morning, and an extra hour of light in the evening. When I was a kid throwing a paper route, DST always annoyed me, because I threw my route in the darkness INSTEAD of in the early morning light (which is much easier).

I think you are getting confused with the argument for keeping DST year-round instead of regular time.

In any case if the kids waiting for the bus in darkness is a problem, there is an easy solution: start school later. That's better for them, anyway.
