Windows 10

Has anyone upgraded to Windows 10? After one of the mandatory updates to my Windows 7 I discovered I now have a new icon on my task bar encouraging me to take advantage of a free upgrade to Windows 10.
I know that I've read somewhere that they were going to do this but I'm still hesitant to mess with what seems to work fine for me.

I accepted the upgrade on this computer. My understanding is that on some magical date in July, the Windows 10 executable file will be downloaded to the computer. After that it is up to me to run the file and install Win 10. I don't ever have to if I don't want to. Microsoft says that if you create a restore point before the installation you can go back if you decide you don't like it. I have an old Win 7 laptop we don't use much that will probably be the test platform.

What I'm reading is that Win 10 will be available on 29 July and will be free for a year and as long as you keep the computer. What is not known is what it will cost after that. Also, what do the my by computer. If the hard drive goes do you have to buy it?

I'm still mad that I had to give up XP. Will drag my feet as long as possible before going to 10................unless it has better font sizes, in the programs I use most, that Win 7. Spent waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much time trying to find a fix for the issue only to learn there ain't no fix. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I've got 'windows 8.1' according to my wife . Don't like it compared to my previous computer but it's what I have for now . Works ok I guess but is annoying with some of its features or problems . Old computer was better in my opinion but it went to heck awhile ago .

I've done all the updates to a win7 machine, and, since you reminded me, I'm downloading the latest preview now.

I think I'm going to like wintin. It's fast and slick. I'm no computer genius and my hobby is to play with MacBook Pro, win8.1, and wintin on a home network. I like the look and feel, but we'll see. I really like the 'squeaky clean' network setup and run all my computers from the same router ... I like the new (renewed) Linksys as it can take on huge downloads fast.

I've had some problems that I attribute to new os bugs. For example; my fairly new laserjet 251 pro keeps falling out of my small network on the wintin and 8.1 machines.

And there is a learning curve that many will not like, but the pazazz could win them over. What I think is that it's a good way to head off Alzheimer's by keeping the little gray cells busy. I treat it as play and don't find many uses for opportunistic frustration ... so 'it's AWL GOOD.'

My job (web design) is a constant steep learning curve. I don't need or want any more learning curves in my life nor do I want pazazz from my computer. Sounds like Win10 is yet another "improvement" I'll be dragged kicking and screaming into. Again, I was perfectly happy with XP. Seems to me each version since XP is a little less technically appealing and less user friendly.

I'm still using XP on my desktop. Still works OK. Gets a little flaky sometimes, but if I reboot, it clears up.

Running XP on two spare boxes in the shop and XP on two work laptops. Win 7 on our two main boxes in the office, win 7 on the travel laptop and netbook.

As far as Iv'e seen 8.1 was a cluster.

I'll wait to hear from early adopters on 10.

My 92 year old mother has an XP box that she uses for email and to access her bank account online. That's all. It started running slow so we bought her a Win 7 box. Unfortunately, Outlook Express is not part of Win 7 so we had to switch her email to her Verizon account. She hated it. People that old do not want to learn something new. So we put the XP box back. I don't know what we will do if it craps out. Win 8 and Win 10 are definitely out of the question for her.

I still have an XP drive in my computer. Haven't resorted to it in many months but it's nice to know it's there. We really need to put in another drive and put Win10 on it but I dread moving everything over to it. Too much paying work to do right now to even think about it.

I remember how cheated and angry I was when the 2880 modems hit the market. I didn't
know how to keep up then and had only just bought a 1440 and thought I was so clever! Hot stuff on a stick!!!

I have only played around with it, but it seems to me you could goWin 7, 8.1 or 10 and
create a virtual machine and install 98 on it. I quit being a 98 fan when 7 was released and
didn't look back. I have friends, tho, who swear by it and will give it up only when it's
removed from their cold, dead hands.

Sad, but true ... it's the smartphone and tablet age and the kids call the shots

... those who can't or won't adapt are
pitilessly left behind. My best guess? If users give it a chance, I think they will like wintin.

PS I have a virgin copy of 98 that I'd consider selling. Of course it has zero updates and I
dunno who would want it.

My IPhone 6+ and my mini IPad are much faster, much cleaner and much more user friendly.

Thunderbird is a great email program, and it is 100% free.

Just talked to my Computer Repair Cousin. He said go for it. I have HATED 8.1 since I bought this laptop and bitched about it many times. Just signed up for download and will try it when available. It will be cheaper than a new computer when they do charge me. ( I Hope )

I've been playing with WinTin Pro (Insider Preview, Evaluation Copy. Build 10130) for the last few days. I'm an old cuss you might not think would like the shiny and newfangled, but I like this.

Starts up about as fast as OS X, Powershell is good (and a bit difficult to help prevent those who should not play with fire away), I like the touch screen OK, but I prefer keeping my fingers on the keyboard. Cortana might become a good thing.

I like the way it looks and its speed. I like that it connects to the other wi fi gizmos I've got.

I very much like the WinTin networking and internet features. Sometimes I'd rather get more under the hood, but these features are truly easy and intuitive in my opinion. OH, I really like the new approach to Control Panel and the way one can make windows more and more your own.

I have been using Open Office for years, but the way windows merges almost seemlessly with MS Office 365, I'll very likely go with that. And it's always up to date!

This doesn't seem to be a very popular forum so this'll be my last contribution here unless somebody else keeps it going.

Hate to see you go. We need reasoned people who are interested in and will post a variety of subjects........yeah, and I guess we need the nuts too. A board is only as good as those who are willing to contribute.

As with most boards I suspect there are a lot of lurkers. I really don't understand wanting to lurk without participating but that's just me. I did lurk for a goodly while but that was because I was concerned that I wouldn't be welcomed based on a previous negative board experience. Crocmommy encouraged me to join. I haven't been called names by anyone but Red Oak but I love him anyway.
