I guess I need to tinker with Windows 10 and see how it goes. I'll use a work computer for that, of course.

And on the subject of Open Office, right there with ya. Unless you are doing complicated stuff, it works just fine. Typed up many a lesson for my students on it. I think I switched over to Libre Office a few years ago and it works even better.

I loved it when the occasional kid would show up with a thumb drive with an Open Office document on it, wondering what I could do to get it to print. My answer always was, "kid, you came to the right place."

Running XP on two spare boxes in the shop and XP on two work laptops. Win 7 on our two main boxes in the office, win 7 on the travel laptop and netbook.

As far as Iv'e seen 8.1 was a cluster.

I'll wait to hear from early adopters on 10.

I have played some more with the latest technical preview of the Win Ten OS and I am really high on it.

I'd recommend you get it and try it out. It's slick, smooth and fun.

Even better: get it and create a Virtual Machine with it and then you can install just about any
windows, linux, or mac os you want on it.

You get ALL the safe aspects of Ten, you can't hurt it no matter how hard you try (well ...
that's purty much true, free if you're running the right flavor of windows AND (last but not
least) you can try out the new Win Ten --- I expect you'll like it.

We are going to install it on the computer Bob built for me a few months ago. I don't want to install it on this one because the first install is free..............not so for further installs. Bob will take my current Win7 drive and stick it in the new computer. Then we will install 10 on the other drive.

Thanks for the encouraging words. Despite the business I'm in, which is constantly changing, I do not take change well. Bob never fails to remind me of the time I said "Why does anyone need a micowave?" or "What do we need with the internet?" Heck, sometimes I bring it up myself. Ah, the joys of a long marriage.............and a shared sense of humor.

Bob said to ask you what the host OS is for virtual machines. He asks because one of his clients is using a Windows based host and he's not very impressed with it. This is completely out of the realm of my understanding but maybe you will understand.

Is Win10 an upgrade or a clean install? I'm dreading having to transfer all my programs AGAIN!

I downloaded Ubuntu (a Linux OS) and burned it on a DVD, then installed it on a spare computer from from the DVD.

After that is done, I downloaded VirtualBox and installed it on Ubuntu. Once that is up and running, he can host all sorts of OSes inside it if he has the install disk.

This isn't the only way to go about it, but that's how I did it. I have it on an older machine at work and it lags. It does fairly well on my 4 year old home PC.

Both Ubuntu and VirtualBox are free.

Turns out we are going to have to purchase Win10 because I have an after market version installed on this machine. I wondered why I didn't have the icon y'all were talking about. Bob builds all our computers so we always have after market OS. They don't offer the upgrade for after market versions...............though I haven't a clue why. I imagine y'all know, if your motherboard dies or you switch computers, you too will have to purchase it. The good news is it's $200. Seems cheap in the world of most of the multi multi hundred dollar software I usually buy. So, I guess I won't be trying it out until after July 29.

I don't see any reason to upgrade from Win 7. What would be the benefit? Mickysoft is not telling us anything about what to expect. What will it do that 7 won't? 7 does everything that I want it to. Will it be faster, more bug free? Who knows? If MS knows they are not telling us.

As they did with XP they are probably going to halt support for 7. They may have already announced it. I don't keep up with these things. I count on Bob to do it. So glad to have a tech dept.
