Kerosene clothes dryer

Well, no. Not really. But it smells that way.

We bought a new stackable W/D about 2 1/2 years ago when we moved into another house. I don't know when I first noticed it, but from time to time, I would smell kerosene whenever the dryer was on, and sometimes the clothes came out smelling like kerosene. I hadn't washed anything that had been near cleaning solvents so it's been a mystery. I thought it might be a seal coming lose or a hose badly connected. Nope and nope. And we've moved again recently and the issue still persists.

After some online research, I've concluded that all the work we do on houses is responsible. We've painted using latex and oil based paints, had new floors and carpet put in, and some floors refinished. Apparently the chemicals emitted can linger FOREVER in small amounts and when the dryer is working, the smell is pronounced. I guess that makes sense but it seems odd the clothes would end up smelling like kerosene. I grabbed a fresh towel from the cabinet the other day and the smell was really strong.

Now for the really weird part... the oven in the new house is doing it too. Whenever I fire it up, the kitchen smells like kerosene. The first time I used it after the kitched had been repainted (including a lot of oil-based paints), the tater tots smelled funny. I tossed them out.

Anyone else ever experience this?

I've recommeded liquid live bacteria before for odor control.

For the drier I would soak some old rags in this stuff and toss them in.

For the oven, I think a good old cleaning with oven cleaner, then a wipe down and warm up with this stuff might work. If it is an electric oven pay close attention to the heater elements, if it's gas you might consider removing the burners and soak them well then air dry.

This is the brand we use. Other brands do not have a fragrence added.

I have no experience with your problem, but I have been told that activated charcoal--the kind purchased at a pet store for use in aquarium filters--will remove odors very effectively.

I was told that to remove the paint smell from a room to put a pie pan full of the charcoal in the middle of the room, then close the room for 24 hours.

That's all I can add to the conversation.
