But there is certainly no shortage of Deer....
It is called deer shooting.
Re: Cecil the Lion
also referred to as HARVESTING for Meat as far as deer go . Back home the deer were known as 'woods rats' and there would be herds of them on the roads as the swamps were thawing out .

There are roughly 44 murders a day in the US.
It's been 29 days since the lion was killed.
That makes 1276 human deaths that are much more important than the death of any animal.
Every one of those should be blazing the internet before Cecil is even mentioned, much less grieved over.

Can't believe you are serious with this.
If so, we'd have to have thousands of pages of print, hundreds of hours of tv whose intent is to help us mourn for the thousands of innocent people who were deprived of their lives by evil deed and/or tragic accident.
It's a false dichotomy. Just bec someone thinks the life of a lion, skunk or quail is important news is not saying that any other life is more or less important. A lot of people had feelings about the lion and they want to know about it and what's going on with it. Folks are directly if not deeply affected by this very sad news and there's nothing wrong with that.
The hypothetical 'fact' that a kid in Grand Rapids was murdered sadistically yesterday is tragic. Horrible. It's in no way disloyal or demeaning to that kid that we want to mourn for 'Cecil' too.
And, it seems to me that, with the explosion of high tech gear and, at least a seeming increase of those who want to hunt wild beasts for how many hundreds of thousands of dollars, the formerly honorable choice of sport hunting has been turned into just one more trivial 'game' in which the hunted has no chance (is this a fair fight? Hell no.) and the hunter has no risk. And if I ever meet a blighter who hunts wolves from a helicopter, I might lose a little control. Just sayin'
If you are convinced that a poached lion is inconsiderable, that's no skin off my nose.
I wouldn't mind if those glassy-eyed, slobbery lipped losers had a few hours experience of being hunted by use of current technology. I'd love to see a fat, old multibillionare hunted by a heavily armed helicopter! (No, I'm not serious. I don't wish harm for anyone with all the obvious exceptions.)
Today, I'm just sad that a magnificent animal, loved by thousands, was so cheaply and so callously taken. And I kinda hope the bastard has to have a dozen painful root canals. NO, I just kidding!!! I think.

This event stinks; it does not sound like a fair chase hunt.
I agree with that excepting: I believe the hash brained nincompoops who have no appreciation for what they are doing
should be advised to go home and learn some manners as well as respect for the quarry. And stop f*cking killing
lions, tigers, white rhinos, etc, etc.

The statement below had my name at the beginning. I dont know how that happened. I was replying to that post put on the board by "BillB".
I certainly DO feel for the 1276 lives lost , but I also have enough passion to feel grief for the grand creature as Cecil was. BillB and I differ on this one .

Re: Cecil the Lion
Let me see can I get my head around this.
It's understandable and even laudable to protest the furling of a symbol whose controversial display is meaningful to some and detested by others, but laughable when the many who lionize a majestic and universally beloved symbol of the beauty and wonder of creation whose very presence brought unspeakable joy is cheaply, illegally(?) and unethically killed?
I'm not opposed to ethical hunting. I am opposed to shooting fish in a barrel. I am outraged in the presence of animal pain. It should be stopped.
And it seems that big game hunts do not actually provide much, if any, help for the wild animal protection or sustenance. In fact, lion populations have dropped ninety percent as the hunts continue. Coupled with the facts that lions and other animals are bred for purpose of being prey and there's a waiting live of sorts seeking to venture forth, It seems to me that all this is, in fact, unsustainable. Critters who have hardly experienced the wild become nothing more than slowly moving targets. And it has become a big deal when so-called hunters kill these (mostly?) tame critters that have become like cabbages to be callously, not heroically, 'harvested' by exploiters who don't have much useful to do?
I can't.

What I read was that the lion was lured to a spot and killed.
I don't understand big game hunting but then I don't understand the desire to hunt period. But that's just me. And I really don't understand wanting to have the dead animals looking at you from the walls in perpetuity. Would keep me awake at night.
Sounds a lot like TX hunters feeding deer all year so they can kill them when the hunting season starts.

"There exists a twisted logic that justifies these hunts as "conservation" efforts. Some claim that by paying for the right to kill a rare animal, the proceeds can go toward conservation efforts and thereby the kills are really in the name of conservation. Yet a number of studies have found that as little as 3 to 5% of revenues from trophy hunting operations are shared with local communities. And even if some of the money from these one-off kills eventually goes toward local people, it pales in comparison to the long term renewable revenue brought in by ethical wildlife watching and photography safaris, which bring billions of dollars in income to Africa."

Yeah, I know. If it's got anything to do with CNN it must be wrong. Well, then. Show me.

Re: Cecil the Lion
Heard this same discussion yesterday on the radio. I think I would be prone to agree with CNN and the station I listened to. As corrupt as most of those countries are I doubt much if anything winds up benefiting the animals. It probably does benefit a bunch of the authorities who receive the money though.
Working to love my fellow person regardless : >

Sure Sue , course that's not the fault of hunters like the good Doctor or other big game and trophy hunters .
