Why TV Networks Are Cutting Back on Commercials

Postby John In Austin » Tue Nov 10, 2015 3:45 pm

Glad to see this. Radio needs to follow suit.

Why TV Networks Are Cutting Back on Commercials

Time Warner, Fox, Viacom respond to ad-free streaming services

Commercial time had increased to make up for falling ratings

Hate commercials? Good news: You may see fewer of them.

Media companies, including Time Warner Inc., 21st Century Fox Inc. and Viacom Inc., have started cutting back on commercials after years of squeezing in as many ads as possible.

I've noticed now fewer or shorter commercials.............but at least we are paying for all those channels that were originally intended to be commercial free. :? :? :? We are also now seeing "product placement" regularly in shows.

I had a trial with Sirius with my new car. UH, it now has commercials. No way am I paying for Sirius and its commercials. A million channels and only about 3 I would be interested in listening to, thank you.

Since I binge watch (almost every nite), I get a better idea of what commercials
do to 'hour long' programs.

Most of the one hour programs and programs at about 42-43 minutes.

Maybe one day all digital entertainment and information will come by some
reasonable internet creation. And each person can decide 'Do I want free
content with or paid content without the blankety blank commercials.

(Or you could mix and match!)

If you think TV networks are cutting back on commercials then you haven't been watching much TV!!

About 80% of my TV anymore is what I have recorded on the DVR. I hate commercials. Most are written for the intelligence level of a 12 year old. Way to many are just stupid.

Agree. I still watch some network TV and I can't say that I have seen any decrease in advertising. You really notice it watching something on demand when fast forward has been disabled.

On demand is the pits. Same 5 commercials over and over and over and over and over. :x

I tried to watch a movie the other night. "As good as it gets". A very good movie I've seen before. It was 10 minutes of movie, 5 minutes of commericals over and over. I finally turned it off.

I record most of the shows I watch so I can skip through the commercials. Usually at least 15 Min before I start watching. I love my FIOS!

I can do that to if it's something that I plan to watch.

If you really want to see commercials, check out the UHF and secondary digital channels. Services like HBO have spoiled us for watching movies uninterrupted.

And thank God for Turner Classic Movies.

I have a tv , only watch news and specials and special FREE movies on the free channels like the movie 'The Road' and other stuff I like . I keep waiting to see 'oldies' like ZULU , Lonesome Dove , Shogun , [Russian made] Come and See , the Russian made Stalingrad but so far no luck . Mostly listen to radio and select news on tely . So , commercials don't bother me one way or the other !!

I keep Fox Business Network during market hours..and a little HGTV sometimes at night..that's about it.

After last night's FBN debate, as contrasted with the CNBC debate..everyone should now understand why you need to turn on the former and shut off the latter.

Commercials don't bother me. It's Capitalism. I love all things "Capitalist."

Probably my favorite channel. Problem is I'm running out of old movies I've not seen before.
