I think what your seeing is the result of Bernanke's QE taper. Which Bernanke knew was coming which is why he's gone. A fiat money economy starts collapsing just as soon as the money supply stops expanding.

People trying to pay off their college loans with a part time job at Hobby Lobby or waiting tables aren't going to spend a lot of money. The FED engineered Housing Bubble 2.0 is tanking except at the very highest priced property and is heading straight down into Housing Bust 2.0.

Back in 1990 when the economy tanked I was sitting with one of my larger accounts and he asked me how I was handling the downturn in business.
I bluntly told him I refused to participated in the downturn and planned on beating my prior years sales. Happy was a little surprised and then after thinking about my comment for a minute or so realized we could increase sales by being smart and agressive.
Our business did increase , year over year, and I did beat my prior year totals and commissions.
