IMO, political opposites can be good friends if neither makes the differences change to personal attacks.
Discuss the ideas, not the personality of the person.
I cut my teeth listening to my father and his good friend cuss/discuss the political things of the day.
They remained friends because the two men debated the issues, not one another's personal attributes.
Calling each other names was never part of the exchange.
IMO talk radio changed all that. Many people today cannot disagree on anything without throwing in personal insults.
