Trip insurance

Postby jellowrestling » Tue Nov 01, 2016 4:15 pm

We're going to be going on a cruise next year. I'm going to buy trip insurance, but I've never done it before (we took a cruise in September, but my son arranged the trip insurance; I would talk to him about it, but they are on a cruise!). The travel agency sent a quote from a company, but I looked at USAA, and it's about $50 cheaper for something similar (but not exactly). They also have an even more comprehensive one for abotu $20 more than the travel agency's company. Anyone have any thoughts about this?

We will be flying into LaGuardia in the morning, then a car/driver will take us to the port at Bayonne (same process in reverse coming back). My concern, of course, is if there is a flight delay, traffic accident, etc... that would prevent us from going. Also, with my back problem, there is always a small chance that I might be physically unable to go (but not very likely).

jello, I've never purchased it, but I assume it could possibly come in handy. I wouldn't be too worried about delayed flights into LaGuardia, it's kinda like NY's version of Love Field. Of course if you're going in the winter anything 'could' happen. My suggestion would be to not cut it so close on your flights that a 2 hour (r so) delay, either with flight or transport to Bayonne, would be a big deal. I might even fly in a day early and spend the night in the city.

Your back is a different story, and I don't know about cruises. I won't go on one. Don't want to wake up in the middle of the night floating in the middle of the Atlantic in my underwear.

No opinion about travel insurance. I've never purchased it.

A couple things though..La Guardia is an especially notorious airport for delays..any time of year..and winter is always another level of concern.

I had to google Bayonne..didn't know where it was..not that far, but I would want lots of extra time to get there.

Thanks for the advice. I have re-arranged things a bit. Found a flight to Newark the day before (a little pricier, but still cheap), and a hotel by the airport. My stress level about it has dropped quite a bit. We have to change planes (which is always a little stressful for me), but it's a morning flight, so if we miss the connection, we can still get there (and the hotel has a shuttle).

FWIW, the original flight was scheduled to land at 10:30am, and we have to be checked in at the port by 2:00pm (ship sails at 3pm). That was enough time unless there was a significant delay. A two-hour delay would have screwed up everything. When I originally booked that flight, I thought we had to be checked in by 3pm.

It's about 20 minutes from the hotel to the port, so that should all work out well. It only adds about $150 to the cost of the trip (which is fine). The trip is in January, so snow is always a concern.

Thanks. Both the travel agency and USAA use third-parties. I think they make that pretty clear (unless someone isn't paying attention).

Yep, KRLD announced a day or two ago that La Guardia was last on the list for some sort of being on time thing. It wasn't good whatever it was.

That's strange. I've flown in and out of LaGuardia many times and have never experienced anything more than a few minutes here and there.

Chicago O'Hare is a different story. I've always had problems there.

Have you checked your policy. You might have Trip Insurance coverage.
