For those who know plants etc.

Postby LibraryLady2 » Thu Dec 01, 2016 1:13 pm

My sister, who lives in a rural area, has a ditch with steep incline in front of house. Mowing ditch is scary.
Would planting monkey grass on that incline be an option? ..or an option to consider?

My thought--spreads fast, stops at 6-8 inches tall.
Shorter grass would be better, but I don't know of another grass that would not need to be mowed.

Would some other grass be better--something to eliminate mowing steep incline?

Buffalo grass gets chocked out by Bermuda or St. Augustine, so not an option.

You might want to consider the dwarf mondo grass rather than full sized.

Well in that case I suggest Glyphosate.

That plant is $$$ and does not spread --at least it is so slow one could say it does not spread.
I planted about a 5 ft. strip under our bird feeders about 7 years ago. It has yet to fill in the 5" I left between plants.
Neil Sperry said it was a slow grower, but it is so slow, I'd qualify it as "not spreading."

...and that small area cost me almost $100.

Yes, but after his head injury he doesn't post much.
I also have Neil Sperry to ask.

We need someone to develop a mid size mondo grass. :)

Blow off the plants and do some sort of stone work. I've seen some neat looking river bed type looking stone work in places. Might not be her cheapest up front option but over the long run probably would be. In my experience, monkey grass will die off on you if you don't keep it well watered.

Good plan..or fill the hole.

I don't recall exactly how but he got hit in the head somehow. Grouchy should know more than I do. I think it was pretty serious for a while.

He woke up next night and went to the kitchen for a drink of water. Approximately ten days later he woke up to find himself in ICU at big Baylor. He had fallen and hit his head. He was lucky that his wife found him within a couple of minutes.
Cliff is a good man.

I had a dear friend fall like that this year. She lives by herself and woke up on the floor with blood on the floor. The doctors never did figure out what caused that to happen.

I'll ask Cliff if he has any great ideas for this.
