I went bar hopping that night and all my drinks were comped, either by the bar or customers. The Japanese thought it was a really big deal.
They were a lot more excited about it than I was.
I was in a similar situation in Copenhagen, Denmark. I was on leave checking out northern Germany and Denmark, not even really that aware of the situation. Whenever anyone there found out I was an American it was drinks and questions about how proud I was to be an American. There was some sense of that but they were far more impressed than I was at the time. I was far more interested in just trying to mingle with the local populace at least the feminine gender portion of it.
Sadly/happily that didn't happen until the next day when I met a couple of American women at the "Little Mermaid" sculpture and spent the day touring breweries in the city.
