Gaza City (CNN) -- Hamas claimed it captured an Israeli soldier Sunday on the deadliest day yet in the battle between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza.

The solider was taken during an early morning operation, according to Abu Obeida, a spokesman for Hamas' military wing, al-Qassam Brigades.

He provided the supposed soldier's name and ID.

"He is a prisoner, and if Zionists lie about the dead and wounded, then the fate of this soldier is their responsibility," the spokesman said.

There was no immediate comment from Israel. The Israel Defense Forces said it was aware of the report and looking into it.

Even if it WAS true, what would the Israelis do? Would they give over 5 of their captives for one of their soldiers?

2 American-born Israeli soldiers killed in Gaza fighting

FoxNews.com

Two American-born soldiers for the Israeli Defense Forces were killed in fighting in the Gaza Strip, their families confirmed Sunday.

Stuart Steinberg confirmed the death of his son Max Steinberg, 24, to The Associated Press on Sunday. Steinberg, whose family lives in Southern California's San Fernando Valley, was a sharpshooter for the Golani Brigade. He was one of 13 Israeli soldiers killed in fighting Sunday during the first major ground battle in two weeks of fighting between Israel and Hamas.

Earlier Sunday, the IDF said in a statement that Sgt. Nissim Sean Carmeli, 21, was killed in combat in the Gaza Strip. Carmeli was from South Padre Island, Texas, said Deputy Consul General of Israel to the Southwest Maya Kadosh. She said Carmeli moved to Israel four years ago and added that the consulate helped his family get a flight there Sunday.

Late Sunday, the State Department also confirmed the soldiers' deaths, but made no further statement.

Israel has a history of trading HUGE numbers of the enemy for one Israeli.

I do not think that has served them well.

Ok, I am not aware of that. I figured Israel was tougher than that.

Seven more Israeli troops killed in Gaza
as Palestinian death toll rises to 500

By William Booth, Sudarsan Raghavan and Ruth Eglash
The Washington Post

GAZA CITY — Seven more Israeli soldiers were killed in fighting over the past 24 hours, bringing the military’s death toll to 25 since the Israeli ground offensive in Gaza began Thursday, Israel’s military said Monday evening.

An additional 30 soldiers were injured, three of them severely.

The number of rockets fired by Palestinian militants into Israel also dramatically soared, with the Israeli military saying that 104 rockets struck the Jewish state on Monday, mostly in the southern areas close to the Gaza border. Three rockets were fired into Tel Aviv, Israel’s second most populated city. One struck the metropolitan area but did not inflict any casualties, the military said, while Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted the other two.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian death toll rose to more than 500 on Monday as Israel announced that it had prevented two more attempts by Hamas militants to infiltrate the nation via tunnels from the Gaza Strip.
