Down on the farm

Postby Bob Of Burleson » Wed Jul 23, 2014 1:09 pm

Rangers Farm Report: Tuesday games

Stars of the Day
AAA: Ross, Klein / Choice, Hoying
AA: Gallo, Herrera, Skole

AAA: Round Rock 4, at Oklahoma City (HOU) 1
Record: 51-50, -1.5

SP Robbie Ross: 6 innings, 8 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 6 strikeouts, 6.66 ERA
RP Phil Klein: 2 scoreless innings, 3 walks, 4 strikeouts, 0.00 ERA
RP Spencer Patton: 1 perfect inning, 2 strikeouts
LF Michael Choice: 2-4, double, .282/.348/.462
CF Jared Hoying: 1-3, 16th homer, walk, .249/.311/.468

Klein was unusually walk-prone but maintained his 0.00 ERA and dropped his opposing line to .119/.245/.119 with a 43% strikeout rate. Klein is Rule 5-eiligible if left unprotected this winter. Texas's 40-man maneuvers are going to be interesting, what with nine on the 60-day DL who'll need to be reinstated and a high-than-usual number of intriguing possibilities for addition (aside from Luke Jackson and Jorge Alfaro, who are locks).

AA: Frisco 6, at Midland (OAK) 7 (7)
AA: Frisco 8, at Midland (OAK) 3 (7)
Record: 17-15, -3.0

SP Jerad Eickhoff (1): 5.1 innings, 6 hits, 6 runs, 3 walks, 2 strikeouts, 4.33 ERA
SP Martire Garcia (2): 3 innings, 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, 3 strikeouts, 1.74 ERA
RP Keone Kela (2): 1 scoreless inning, 2 hits, 1 strikeout, 2.52 ERA
3B Joey Gallo: 4-7, 11th homer, .278/.364/.586
2B Odubel Herrera: 3-6, double, 2 walks, .348/.391/.430
CF Jake Skole: 3-6, double, .236/.308/.329
C J.T. Wise: 4-4, double

In his first at-bat, Gallo struck out for the 64th time in 146 plate appearances (44%), matching his number of strikeouts in 246 appearances at Myrtle Beach (26%). In his second at-bat, Gallo crushed a pitch to right center for his 32nd homer of the year. Wise is a recent indy-ball addition.

Look for Patton in Arlington soon.

New Rangers prospect Patton retires
batter in Triple-A All-Star Game

Steve Hunt
FOX Sports Southwest

Just hours after being traded to the Texas Rangers, Spencer Patton pitched in the Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, North Carolina, and retired the only batter he faced in the bottom of the second inning.

Patton, 26, was acquired by the Rangers on Wednesday afternoon in a trade that sent veteran reliever Jason Frasor to Kansas City. This year marks Patton's third full season of pro ball after the Royals took him in the 24th round of the 2011 First-Player Draft.

. . .

Prior to the trade, Patton, who will be assigned to Triple-A Round Rock at least for the time being, was closing for the Royals' Triple-A affiliate in Omaha. With the Storm Chasers, he had made 34 appearances and had finished 27 games with a 4-3 record and 14 saves. Opposing hitters were batting just .161 against him.
