Re: MyRA
I don't see how a retirement savings bond limited to $15,000 will lead to confiscating 401ks.
What am I missing ?

This is only step one. Go read the writings of the MyRA creator, Theresa Ghilarducci. The ultimate goal is to nationalize all retirement accounts. Think of her as the Jonathan Gruber of retirement.

Re: MyRA
The FED has already confiscated your IRA and 401k by holding interest rates to nothing. By the time you need the money it won't buy much if is in bonds. If it is in stocks it will be wiped out in the next crash.

Grandma just said she is not going to allow interest rates to rise. The news that the FED is going to
continue to rob you and transfer the interest your retirement money would otherwise generate to the military/industrial complex was good news for the market.
Without compound interest there is no way to keep up with inflation and you will still have to pay the
income tax unless you pay it in advance in a Roth. But, paying taxes today on money that you can't access for years doesn't sound like a very good idea either.

Allow them to rise?
You mean she will not raise them..that's because the paltry 1.5% inflation we've been experiencing has dropped LOWER recently.
But I guess if I believed inflation was 9%..I'd be rather confused, too.

I guess you don't do the grocery shopping. The price of hamburger has doubled since 2009.

The gotv. thinks that since nobody's starving, if one kind of food is too expensive your'll just eat something cheaper. If you can't afford hamburger you'll eat chicken or something. When you can't afford chicken, you'll maybe eat dog food or something. So, they don't even count food in the CPI.GFB wrote:Always the same silly retort.

Yes they do.
When fuel and food are added to the CPI..the inflation rate is even LOWER..because of fuel costs dropping hugely, of course.

Food and energy are not even included in the CPI.

Great news starting next year ;
Announcements
New Estimation System
Effective with the release of the January 2015 CPI on February 26, 2015, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will utilize a new estimation system for the Consumer Price Index. The new estimation system, the first major improvement to the existing system in over 25 years, is a redesigned, state-of-the-art system with improved flexibility and review capabilities. For more information on this new system, please see http://www.bls.gov/cpi/cpinewest.htm.
Chained Consumer Price Index to be Revised Quarterly
Effective with the release of CPI data for January 2015 on February 26, 2015, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will begin quarterly revisions of the Chained Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (C-CPI-U). In addition, a Constant Elasticity of Substitution (CES) formula will replace the geometric mean formula for the calculation of Initial and Interim C-CPI-U indexes. For additional information, please see http://www.bls.gov/cpi/cpiccpi.htm.
Chained Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (C-CPI-U) Annual Average Indexes Discontinued
The final revisions of the C-CPI-U indexes for 2012 will be available in February 2014. Annual average indexes for C-CPI-U series will not be published for time periods after 2012. (Monthly C-CPI-U indexes will continue to be published.) In February 2014, the annual average indexes for the final estimates for 2012 C-CPI-U series will be published in the public CPI database. Table 1CA will not be published.

Re: MyRA
One truth I learned is a new estimation system is being used for the first time in 25 years.
Should be interesting to see if anyone will compare the current system & new system ....like the old CPI is compared with the current one.

No, you're going to have to find a way to do that on your own.
Governments don't want Recessions or Depressions either..they lose lots of money, too.
