Immigrants flood into Italy fleeing from Africa

It is commonplace to read in the news of illegal aliens dying by the dozens when their makeshift craft sink in the Mediterranean trying to reach Spain or Italy but there has never been anything like what has been happening in the last few weeks. One tactic smugglers have recently adopted is to buy a ship destined for the wrecking yard and load it with up to 800 people and abandon it near Italian territorial waters to force the Italian Coast Guard to rescue the occupants. A few days ago 400 people reportedly died when one such ship sank, and there have been other lesser disasters. More than 10,000 Africans have made it to Sicily in recent weeks (8,480 during the last weekend) and many are saying they are fleeing Muslim terrorists in Sub-Saharan Africa. In one case, fifteen Muslims off one vessel have been arrested for throwing twelve other passengers in the sea to drown because they were Christians.

Rome (CNN)Italy is coping with a rising wave of desperate migrants from Africa and Middle East hoping to make it to Europe.

From Friday to Monday, a total of 8,480 migrants were rescued, according to the Italian coast guard, which said it received on Monday -- alone -- SOS calls from 20 boats in distress.

On Tuesday, a spokesman with Save the Children told CNN the group fears 400 migrants could be missing, citing testimony from survivors who said their ship carrying 550 people capsized in the Mediterranean Sea about 80 miles off the Libyan coast.

The Italian coast guard, however, told CNN that while it is taking the report seriously, it cannot confirm such an incident and has not yet found evidence at sea to indicate a migrant boat carrying approximately 550 has capsized with 145 rescued.

An operation that included boats and planes did not find any survivors, nor bodies, nor any evidence to indicate a particular boat capsized, Coast Guard official Filippo Marini said.

Police in Sicily have arrested 15 people for allegedly throwing 12 migrants overboard during what appeared to be a Muslim assault against Christians on the high seas amid Italy’s migration crisis.

Palermo police said in a statement on Thursday that they learned of the incident while interviewing tearful survivors from Nigeria and Ghana who arrived in Palermo on Wednesday morning after being rescued at sea.

The survivors said they had boarded a rubber boat with 105 passengers aboard on Tuesday on the Libyan coast. During the crossing, the migrants from Nigeria and Ghana, believed to be Christians, were allegedly threatened with being abandoned at sea by some 15 other passengers from Ivory Coast, Senegal, Mali and Guinea-Bissau.

A fight broke out and 12 passengers were allegedly thrown overboard to their deaths.

The Italian coastguard on Monday said they had managed to rescue 144 of the people on the sunken vessel, while nine bodies were also recovered.

The International Organization for Migration and the charity Save the Children said between 144 and 150 survivors arrived at Reggio Calabria, on Italy's southern tip, on Tuesday morning.

"There were 400 victims in this shipwreck, which occurred 24 hours after (their vessel) left the Libyan coast," Save the Children said in a statement, citing survivors.

"There were several young males, probably minors, among the victims" and also children among those rescued, the international NGO said.

IOM spokesman in Italy Flavio Di Giacomo told AFP several of the survivors had told his organization there were between 500 and 550 people on board when the ship sank.
