Fort Worth Eats

Postby crocmommy » Thu Jul 23, 2015 12:46 pm

Fort Worth peeps?? Has anyone tried Daybreak Cafe over on White Settlement and Foch? I'm going to get brave and go try it.

Let me know if anyone has any other suggestions for places I can try. I work in the Cultural District near I30 and University....close to Will Rogers and the Botanical Gardens, etc...

I can tell you where NOT to try.
Smokey's BBQ at 5300 E Lancaster is supposed to be the best BBQ in Fort Worth.
I tried it a few days ago and was really disappointed. The ribs were fat, greasy and tasteless.
I don't know of any good places in the area you mentioned.

For BBQ, I go to Angelos or Railhead which are both pretty close. Thursday is Rib Special at Rail Head.

Had a mixed fajita plate, chips and a large tea for $6.00, They weren't the best I'd ever had but pretty good for the price. The amount of items on the Daybreak Cafe menu was mind boggling for such a small place.

Flying Fish - Montgomery and Vickery, across from Railhead - good fish, good salads. Really good hushpuppies!

Ever try Montgomery Street Cafe? Montgomery across from that machine shop, right about where that road work is going on. Love it for breakfast. For lunch I'll grab a BLT and you'd swear your momma made it. It's so good. I know it's a dive, but it's been there forever and the people working there are a trip. I fear it will be torn down in the next year or so for the incoming arena development so try it while you can.

Breakfast burritos on the go - try QuickWay mart, also on Montgomery at Washburn. Go to the back of the store and tell the ladies what you want then go pay. I get the egg & bacon burrito w/cheese and it can feed three people. Their homemade salsa rocks, but it's HOT. They have packets of sissy salsa if you'd rather (and most days I'd rather... the homemade is too hot!).

Chuy's on West 7th is a chain, but the food is good and portions are huge so there's always a take-out box.

Curly's (the custard place) on Camp Bowie bricks has hot dogs and I hear they're pretty good.

Back over on Vickery, on the one-way part near the entrance to the Chisholm Tollroad is a place called Feastivities. They do catering, but they also have sandwiches and salads in their refrigerator. And they can make a custom sandwich/salad on the spot. It's an eat-in place so you don't have to take it to go. The desserts are really good. The chicken salad sandwich is my favorite.

When you feel like spending a little more, take lunch at The Modern Museum. Outstanding food, and it's a really nice place to take a break.

When you feel like you gotta have a good old fashioned burger that's big and messy and not Kincaid's, head over to Fred's in the 7th street district off Currie. Be careful where you park. Get the fries.

Bon Appetit!

Yeah, I can vouch for the Modern. Don't care for most of the artwork (I'm more of an Impressionist fan than Modern) but the food is good and the atmosphere is nice.
The only other places I've been in Ft. Worth are a restaurant right across the street from the Kimball that was buffet style (salad makings as I recall) and sold to the food by weight. It's probably long gone. Have no clue what it was called. And, of course Joe T. Garcia's.
Working to love my fellow person regardless : >

Remember Jetton's Cafeteria? Not sure exactly where it was, because when we went there, I wasn't driving...

Jimmy Dips had pretty good Chinese, as well.

When my dad was doing his internship/residency at John Peter Smith hospital; families go to eat Sunday lunch for free in the hospital cafeteria. All I can remember is that it seemed like the only entrée they ever had was chicken caccetorie (sp); and boy did I dislike chicken caccetorie... Still do....

Been to McKinley's a few times. Guess I'm really not a Deli type person. If I'm headed over that way, I end up at Ol South, Hoffbrau or Pulido's.

I've worked over here since 2009, so I do know about quite a few places. Just decided to find a few more with busy season coming up.

Never been to Flying Fish. Don't care for Chuy's...too LOUD in there for my taste, so I usually end up at Pulido's or sometimes Dos Gringos.

Curly's (the custard place) on Camp Bowie bricks has hot dogs and I hear they're pretty good.

Been meaning to get back over to Curly's to have their peach custard.

Back over on Vickery, on the one-way part near the entrance to the Chisholm Tollroad is a place called Feastivities. They do catering, but they also have sandwiches and salads in their refrigerator. I've had a few things from Feastivities...it's ok. I like Swiss Pastry and Vickery St. Cafe over there

When you feel like spending a little more, take lunch at The Modern Museum. Outstanding food, and it's a really nice place to take a break. Some day I'll do that. I have been to The Gardens at the Botanical Gardens. The food is so so, but I go there for the atmosphere

Get the fries. I've been to Fred's once. I prefer M&O's when it comes to overpriced burgers. Normally end up at In n Out since it's close and cheap.

Have you been to Zeke's? It's all fried so I really prefer to split a plate when I go. But it's a guilty pleasure and so good.

Bon Appetit!
