Former Iowa state senator pleads guilty
in Ron Paul endorsement-for-pay scheme

By Matea Gold
The Washington Post

A former Iowa state senator pleaded guilty Wednesday to concealing campaign expenditures and obstructing justice as part of an endorsement-for-pay scheme that roiled the Iowa Republican caucuses in 2012.

Kent Sorenson, of Milo, Iowa, admitted in federal district court that former Rep. Ron Paul’s presidential campaign secretly paid him $73,000 after he dramatically dropped his backing of Rep. Michele Bachmann in late 2011 and endorsed Paul’s White House bid, saying at the time that Bachmann was no longer a viable candidate.

A furious Bachmann charged then that Sorenson was being paid to flip his support to Paul -- an accusation that Sorenson, Paul and his campaign officials all denied.

But in court papers filed Wednesday, Sorenson acknowledged that he had been paid by both presidential campaigns.

Politics is probably the dirtiest profession there is. Just look at the Congressional approval figures. The people that work in political campaigns are even worse. They are mostly whores that are only in it to benefit themselves. If you don't agree read this book.

But, there is no evidence that occurred. They haven't even named anybody in Paul's campaign. I believe Paul actually won Iowa.

I never make anything up. Romney was announced the winner at the end of the Hawkeye Cauci but at the convention the Iowa delegation cast 22 of its 28 votes for Paul.

The idea that Paul would even consider paying anybody for their support is totally nuts. Paul originally ran just to get his message out. Then he began to draw huge crowds of people who were attracted to his message, especially young people. But, he had zero desire to be president or even to be nominated.

I recall at the time there was a lot of complaining by Paul's people about Jessie Benton, the campaign manager. That may be why Paul ended his campaign early.
