Money was endorsed by President Trump, Ted Cruz, Ken Paxton, and Greg Abbott.
The airwaves have been filled in recent weeks with negative TV ads purchased by the Dutton campaign. Slick, full color mailers have stuffed mailboxes throughout the district for the past month. The Dutton campaign has been flush with tons of Austin establishment cash.

Round 2 didn’t turn out to be much of a rematch at all as voters in Hunt, Hopkins and Van Zandt counties gave an overwhelming endorsement to Brent Money over Jill Dutton in Tuesday’s GOP primary for the Texas House District 2 seat.
Dutton had narrowly edged Money in a special election runoff in late January but Tuesday’s contest didn’t prove to be a contest at all. With 99% of the ballots tallied, Money had 17,293 votes (56.9%) to Dutton’s 13,103 (43.1%), according to The Associated Press.
Dutton was sworn into office just three weeks ago after narrowly beating Money on Jan. 30 to fill the unfinished term for former Rep. Bryan Slaton, R-Royse City, who was expelled last May for getting an intern drunk and having sex with her. Dutton is a former Van ISD board trustee and the founder of the Republican Women of Van Zandt.
Money didn’t just win the election on Tuesday, he swept each of the three counties encompassing HD-2. Money captured his home of Hunt County with 59.79% of the vote (8,240-5,541), claimed victory in Hopkins County with 53.3% (3,177-2,784) and even surprised Dutton by winning her home county Van Zandt with 55.15% of the vote (5,876-4,778).
The Associated Press declared Money the winner at 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday after Money had declared victory and Dutton had conceded the election.
“Tonight’s victory goes to the conservative people in this district who are desperate for a conservative fighter in Austin,” Money said in a statement. “For months, the Austin establishment poured millions of dollars into this district to preserve the status quo, but the voters of HD02 sent their message loud and clear: we will not be bought.”
But Money’s win in the Tuesday GOP primary is the more consequential victory.
The win positions Money to hold the two-year term beginning in 2025. Dutton’s term expires at the end of this year and since there is no regular legislative session scheduled for 2024, she is unlikely to cast a vote while in office.
