Fountain Pens

Postby Red Oak » Tue Nov 11, 2014 1:21 pm

When was the last time you used one ?

The subject came up in the office today, and no one under 45 or so recalled ever using one.

When I was a kid we were forced to use one in some subjects, and I always looked as if I had been dipped in an inkwell by the end of the day.

My dad had some and I remember playing around with them when I was a kid.

My Dad collected ball point pens that were used for advertisements. We have @ 10 cigar box's full of them.

I just called my mom and asked her if there were any fountain pens in the collection and she said there were several. She also has the pen set he was given when he went over 40 years of service at Diamond Shamrock.

That's a lot of pens, Grouchy. I think it would look cool to have several of them mounted in a shadow box.

They were going out of use even as far back as I can remember. The ink bottle type was being replaced by the cartridge type. At least you didn't spill ink out of the bottle but they still leaked and scratched and smeared. I can't imagine why anyone would still be using them in this day and age.

They're still sold.
They have replaceable ink cartridges.

I used one once in a while when I was in high school, but like others said, they leaked & smeared. Being left handed made it worse.

They made us use the ones with cartridges in 5th grade...about 1973. Not sure what the point was....

I have a bottle of Sheaffer's Skript writing fluid sitting on my bookshelf. Just a decoration. Don't think I have a fountain pen anymore.

I am so long in the tooth, that I used the kind with the little lever to fill it --the original fountain pens! We thought the cartridges were really neat....and then when "ball point pens" came along....

Lisa, the teachers were preparing you for adult life when you would be using those pens.
When I was a kid, it was a signal that you were growing up when you could use a pen to do your assignments.

We had already been using ball point pens at that point. Just not sure why they made us use those. No other adults I knew were using fountain pens.

Well B-o-B is half right ;)

I used the kind with a lever also.

And then some of the cartridge ones.

That reminds me of something I used later but no longer see, ballpoints with erasable ink.

Anyone else remember those ?

How about dusting erasers? Did you ever draw that chore in school?

I have four of them right now laying on my keyboard. I love fountain pens. They are one of the things I look for at garage and estate sales.
