Cheapest gas you remember

Postby BillB » Thu Dec 11, 2014 5:01 pm

14.9 cents
Gas war in the late 50s. I may have seen it cheaper than that, but that's the lowest figure I remember.
I pumped gas for 17.9 cents in 1964.

I don't think I paid much attention to the price of gas until I started driving. So I don't remember it lower than the mid-20s.

But don't forget about the premiums with fill-ups. Free glasses, free dinnerware, green stamps . . .

Plus you didn't pump it, an attendant did. And cleaned your windshield and checked your oil. And tires if you asked them.

I was the attendant when I pumped it for 17.9 cents.

I'm trying to imaging my mother getting out of the car and pumping her own gas.

My mother did when she was as old as 80. It was the only way she could get it.

I also remember when the attendants wore uniforms with caps.

13 - 14 cents , I remember the lines at the gas stations when a couple gas station was having a war . Also remember it at about 27 cents a gallon when I was pumping gas for a job at KAYO gas company . I'd fill my bike up for a dollar or so , buy a pack of Camels for 50 cents and I was set for the evening . I remember the annoyance when gas jumped to half a buck a gallon .

I think I paid 31¢ for premium. That Impala my brother left me used it. I'd watch the gas gauge go down down down, a real gas hog.

I think 19.9 was the cheapest I remember. My daddy called it "that cheap gas."

When I was old enough to drive, the first oil crisis happened, and it was soon 56.9.

I remember waiting in line for gas in Houston when it had jumped up to 75 cents, thinking the world had gone insane.

22.9 for regular was the low I remember seeing from a pair of service stations that had a Price War for a couple weeks in the city .

My first job in 1971 was a service station attendant. Being a beach town gas was always 3 or so cents higher than LA or San Diego and that price ticked off the people who pulled in off the freeway. Premium was 29.9 and regular was 27.9.
It's ok if you disagree with me.

I can remember when gas went up to GASP...30 cents a gallon....because my job was to help my granddad find gas that was still under 30 cents. He also made me keep track of mileage on trips every time he filled up.

12.9 in Tampa Fl. in 1963. There was a huge gas war going on!
