The phrase was first used relating to the assassination, by senior White House correspondent Merriman Smith of United Press international (UPI).

Twenty five minutes after the assassination, Smith reported "Some of the Secret Service agents thought the gunfire was from an automatic weapon fired to the right rear of the president's car, probably from a grassy knoll to which police rushed."

If you look up the definition, it fits. It truly is a grassy knoll.

If JFK was shot from the back, why is the large piece of his skull that was blown out in the back of his head.

The entry wound is in the back, and he was leaning forward at the time and the car was veering to the left, so the exit wound is at the top right side of his head, maybe an inch or so above his temple. The bullet never made it to the front.

BTW, I don't think I've mentioned before that my brother's father-in-law was a resident at Parkland in the early 60s, and was part of the team that treated JFK.
