Some are more "Equal" than others

Postby Red Oak » Tue Feb 24, 2015 2:22 pm

In a windowless classroom at an Arcadia tutoring center, parents crammed into child-sized desks and dug through their pockets and purses for pens as Ann Lee launches a PowerPoint presentation..

Her primer on college admissions begins with the basics: application deadlines, the relative virtues of the SAT versus the ACT and how many Advanced Placement tests to take.

Then she eases into a potentially incendiary topic — one that many counselors like her have learned they cannot avoid.

“Let's talk about Asians,” she says.

Lee's next slide shows three columns of numbers from a Princeton University study that tried to measure how race and ethnicity affect admissions by using SAT scores as a benchmark. It uses the term “bonus” to describe how many extra SAT points an applicant's race is worth. She points to the first column.

African Americans received a “bonus” of 230 points, Lee says.

She points to the second column.

“Hispanics received a bonus of 185 points.”

The last column draws gasps.

Asian Americans, Lee says, are penalized by 50 points — in other words, they had to do that much better to win admission.

“Do Asians need higher test scores? Is it harder for Asians to get into college? The answer is yes,” Lee says.

“Zenme keyi,” one mother hisses in Chinese. How can this be possible?

yep , doesn't seem right to me so I agree with the Chinese lady but I HISS that in English . Seems to me that everyone should be treated according to the actual scores that they receive . Course , my solution would be to limit the Chinese and 'ALL' other foreigners that come to the USA for schooling , work and residency , citizenship . Course I suppose that the best answer is to tell whites , blacks and browns to smarten up if they want to compete and get into college .

Facing backlash for allegedly stigmatizing minorities — particularly black men — the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities announced on Tuesday that it will no longer include racial descriptors in crime alerts issued to students and faculty.

“This change supports our public safety goals while recognizing the harm that the use of race in crime alerts causes for some members of our community,” the university, which has nearly 50,000 students and is located in Minneapolis and St. Paul, said in a statement.

“Moving forward, the University will use descriptions only when there is sufficient detail that would reasonably help identify specific individual suspects or groups of suspects [e.g., some combination of gender, race, clothing, height, body type, build, accent, tattoos, hair color, facial hair],” the university stated.

The change came about after an 18-month long “campuswide conversation” in which members of the school’s community “raised concerns about the use of racial descriptors as part of Crime Alerts.”

Reminds me of the old movies "Calling all cars, calling all cars. Be on the lookout for a dark sedan heading out of the city." Jeez, what's this country coming to?

coming to , i'm more interested in when is it going to stop . Freedom and Liberty are being lost under mrobama , dems and repubs . The repubs are probably the worst as they don't do anything to stop mrobama . Course , I've said for a long time that 'moderate' repubs are worse than the hardcore dems , progressives and libs , lefties .

The IRS is defending its decision to let illegal immigrants claim up to three years’ refunds on income even if they never paid income taxes, telling Congress in a new letter last week that agency lawyers have concluded getting a Social Security number triggers the ability to go back and ask for previous refunds.

Section 32 of the Internal Revenue Code requires an SSN on the return, but a taxpayer claiming the EITC is not required to have an SSN before the close of the year for which the EITC is claimed,” IRS Commissioner John Koskinen wrote in his letter to Sen. Charles E. Grassley on Wednesday.

Mr. Grassley said that made a mockery of the law, and said he’ll try to write a bill specifically prohibiting it.

“The tax code shouldn’t reward those who broke our immigration laws,” the Iowa Republican and chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said in a statement.

The three-year time frame is part of general tax law, allowing anyone who didn’t file to go back and claim a refund for up to three previous year’s worth of taxes.

But the IRS lawyer’s ruling creates an odd circumstance where illegal immigrants who cheated by not paying taxes before can see if they would benefit from refunds. If they do benefit, they could file, but if they don’t benefit they could continue to avoid taxes for those years.

Mr. Obama’s new amnesty program does not require payment of back-taxes.

The answer is to just be an "African-American" every time you fill out an application for something...

The idiots that run these public institutions have decided that anybody can change genders just because they feel like it. Why should it be any different with race?

You're exactly right.
The only qualification government and US institutions recognize for a Negro is the person's say so. It is illegal to force a person to submit genealogical blood lines to establish race. It was decided that smacks too much of Nazi Germany.
I've been saying for 40 years that to break the back of affirmative action, everyone should claim to be a Negro.

White students were discriminated against at Ryerson University because, ironically, they had never been discriminated against.

Two students tried to attend Ryerson’s Racialized Students’ Collective on March 11. However, when Trevor Hewitt and Julia Knope tried to enter, they were told they were “not victims of racialization,” and were thus barred from entering.

The judgement was apparently made based solely on the color of Hewitt’s and Knope’s skin.

“It felt really bad… kind of embarrassing,” Knope told the campus paper. “If their goal in these meetings was to end racialization then it needs to be something everybody is involved in. If some people are causing the problems, they need to know. Grouping yourself off… is not going to accomplish anything.”

The group that held the event, the Racialized Students’ Collective, claims it “oppose(s) all forms of racism and works toward community wellness for students

The hypocrisy did not escape Ms. Knope. “It seemed really ironic to me that the meeting was about racialization and they were prohibiting certain people from entering,” she said.

Mr. Hewitt added, “Right now it’s almost like they’re suggesting they can make racialization go away (and that) if everyone who has been racialized just talks… it will magically go away.”

Ryerson Students’ Union Vajdaan Tanveer told the campus’s paper that whites should be banned from such events because they might “intimidate” and “judge” minorities.

the problem was when the 2 white students tried to attend the 'racialized co operative' . Whats wrong with their brains , common sense and thinking . By trying to attend they set themselves up to be rejected while they hoped to be accepted !! Sounds like a couple of white appeaser students .
