RUT-ROH

Postby Sangersteve » Wed Apr 29, 2015 9:31 pm

BALTIMORE — A prisoner sharing a police transport van with Freddie Gray told investigators that he could hear Gray “banging against the walls” of the vehicle and believed that he “was intentionally trying to injure himself,” according to a police document obtained by The Washington Post.

The prisoner, who is currently in jail, was separated from Gray by a metal partition and could not see him. His statement is contained in an application for a search warrant, which is sealed by the court. The Post was given the document under the condition that the prisoner not be named because the person who provided it feared for the inmate’s safety.

The document, written by a Baltimore police investigator, offers the first glimpse of what might have happened inside the van. It is not clear whether any additional evidence backs up the prisoner’s version, which is just one piece of a much larger probe.

Gray was found unconscious in the wagon when it arrived at a police station on April 12. The 25-year-old had suffered a spinal injury and died a week later, touching off waves of protests across Baltimore, capped by a riot Monday in which hundreds of angry residents torched buildings, looted stores and pelted police officers with rocks.

Police have said they do not know whether Gray was injured during the arrest or during his 30-minute ride in the van. Local police and the U.S. Justice Department both have launched investigations of Gray’s death.

Even if you could prove the nature of his injuries beyond a reasonable doubt, it won't matter to some. This stopped being about Freddie Grey days ago. We've moved on to whether "thug" is the new N-word.

BALTIMORE, Md. (WJLA) -- An investigation into the death of Baltimore resident Freddie Gray has found no evidence that his fatal injuries were caused during the videotaped arrest and interaction with police officers, according to multiple law enforcement sources.

The sources spoke to ABC7 News after being briefed on the findings of a police report turned over to prosecutors on Thursday.

Sources said the medical examiner found Gray's catastrophic injury was caused when he slammed into the back of the police transport van, apparently breaking his neck; a head injury he sustained matches a bolt in the back of the van.

Details surrounding exactly what caused Gray to slam into the back of the van was unclear. The officer driving the van has yet to give a statement to authorities. It’s also unclear whether Gray’s head injury was voluntary or was a result of some other action.

The medical examiner's office declined to comment on this open investigation and said it does not release preliminary findings.

I agree with Tex. I'm sure it won't matter but aren't they strapped down or seat belted in on those transports? How can one damage himself so badly while belted in?

I'm hearing that they are supposed to be strapped in or belted down , strapped in or restrained in some way [hogtied] . I think that it is probably mandatory policy but not always convenient so my understanding of human nature is that it is probably NOT always done Sue . This incident may be one of the times that strapping down was not done . Speculation by a Doctor on telly is that he could not break his spine by doing it himself !!

I'm sure that a person that is in police custody should be secured in the paddy wagon, but in fact I don't think that that always happens. One instance that I witnessed the two guys were told to get in and sit down.

The doc may be an expert on spinal injury, but he can't be sure of what happened in that van, just think about the perp being pissed, standing up, and the van makes a turn, he stumbles and whammo, hits his head on the door, wall, bolt, whatever.

The Police involved have been indicted; the charges sound serious. Time will tell if the charges are based in fact or are specious.

Prosecutors ruled that Freddie Gray's death was a homicide. Friday morning, State attorney Marilyn Mosby announced that all six officers involved in the incident have been charged and warrants are out for their arrests.

"Six officers are each facing multiple charges, including manslaughter, assault, misconduct in office and false imprisonment: Lt. Brian Rice, Sgt. Alicia White, Officer William Porter, Officer Garrett Miller, Officer Edward Nero and Officer Caesar Goodson," The Baltimore Sun reports. "Goodson, who drove the van, has been charged with second-degree murder."

Mosby described how police arrested Gray on no grounds, violated police procedures by cuffing his hands and legs the van without putting him in a seat belt, and repeatedly failed to provide him with medical attention.

On April 12, Gray was arrested for carrying a knife and his spine was somehow partially severed while in police custody.

Mosby said that the knife was legal and that the officers “failed to establish probable cause for an arrest.”

Gray underwent major surgery, lapsed into a coma, and died on April 19.

“Mr. Gray was no longer breathing at all" when he was removed from the wagon.

His death sparked protests across Baltimore that escalated into riots.

"We know he was not buckled in the transportation wagon as he should have been. No excuses from me. Period," City Police Commissioner Anthony Batts said. "We know our police employees failed to get him medical attention in a timely manner multiple times."

No chance of corruption or trumped up charges from these officials elected by looters, burglars and arsonists.

RUT - ROH , I think that that's once again appropriate !! Hey , if the police didn't restrain him then that's just part of the problem I think !! I still swear that I saw him being drug to the van , didn't look to me that his legs and feet were operating .

Golly! Another abuse of power by police. Guess they will all get prison time................which it sounds like they richly deserve. Have these people learned nothing from the other police brutality occurances? Apparently not.

I would be very careful.

Listen to her speech..sounds like her giving these people what they want, and what they demand..for crooked political reasons..and that is not justice.

Another twist in the tale.

Fraternal Order of Police lodge is asking Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby to appoint a special prosecutor to the Freddie Gray investigation because of her personal connection to the Gray family’s attorney, William H. “Billy” Murphy Jr., and her marriage to a city councilman.

The letter from Gene Ryan, president of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 3, also states that none of the six officers involved in Gray’s arrest and death were responsible for the 25-year-old West Baltimore man’s death that spurred protests and unrest, including rioting and looting on Monday. The letter was released just minutes before Mosby announced charges against the officers.

I'm pretty much going by what I saw with my eyes , once again , it looked like he was being dragged along rather than moving on his own power . That's it , make me think that the spinal injury was before he was even in the van .
