I certainly wouldn't call him a hero but what he chooses to do with his own body is his business. His only error, as I see it, is making it a public spectacle.......even though I understand why he did it. If the changes make him happy and fulfill his life - more power to him. I wish him the best.

BTW, many of us believe it ain't about the ever expanding left. It's the ever expanding group of folks who believe none of us has the absolute truth when it comes what's right for other people and that we should offer compassion to our fellow person (who is breaking no laws) who struggles just as we all struggle. We know nothing about what's going on in anyone else's mind and heart.

That goes for a lot of things we judge people for. I'm learning that as I get older. I try to cut people a break when they are doing something I don't understand....to a point. There can be two sides to a story.

To be serious for a moment, for me this does not involve trying to understand..or trying to be tolerant.

I believe this is all quite "understandable"..and always has been.

This person is mentally ill, and I don't believe I am doing him, or anyone that might consider doing the same kind of thing in the future, any favors by overlooking that fact.

Jenner is a public freak; and no one is stopping him from getting his freak-on in a spectacular fashion.

My suggestion for him is to seek the care of Mental Health Professionals who are not as screwed up as he is (hard to find these days), instead of having himself mutilated via surgery and chemicals, but I really give a Damn what he does or doesn't do.

Really? What if you were Bruce? Would you want someone to tell you that you were mentally ill and should just see a good shrink? This is where compassion enters the picture. Truth is none of us, but God, knows what is going on with others. Calling it mental illness seems to me a simple dismissal of something you don't understand and choose not to try to understand.

I've witnessed a loved one stand in front of my family, with tears running down his cheeks, and ask "Do you think anyone would choose to be gay?? Do you think anyone would choose the hell that it is to be gay????" I believe there are some (particularly women) who dabble in homosexuality and transgender behavior. But the vast majority of those people were born as they are and are as much loved by God as we heteros (and no, I do not buy into the "accepted" translations of the Bible on this issue.). For us to entitle ourselves with some false sense of ultimate knowledge is short sighted, mean spirited, and cruel.

Heck even the most backwards psychological societies, like the APA, are now seeing how wrong they have been historically, in calling these differences mental illness, and how much damage they have inflicted on individuals.

If Jenner though he was a vampire, should he get fangs and fake bat wings ? Or mental help ?

Backwards ? Like calling female male, and vice versa ? I think the compassionate enablers have it backward.

If you had a loved one stand in front of you and confess to being an alcoholic, what would be the compassionate thing to do ?

Offer to take them to an AA meeting or Happy Hour ?

Why did you bring up a gay relative.

That had no relevance here..and Bruce Jenner not gay anyhow.

..and yes, I would hope that family members would not jump into the "tolerance movement'" bit.

If they did, that would' be very selfish as I believe that it is to make the "tolerant" one feel better..and so that no one will criticize them..a weakness society cannot afford.

I think that is a deeply accurate analogy.

This guy pays someone tens of thousands of dollars to carve up his face for 10 hours to make him look a bit more like a woman, and then believes he's a woman?..and can change his name?

You think that's not mentally ill?

This is severe mental illness.

In my opinion, it is lunacy to promote physical mutilation and hormonal treatments, and to denigrate reparative therapy out of hand and outlaw it; and is a good insight into the heads of the LGBTQEIEO Gauleiters.

Apples and mini vans.

I used the gay example because y'all seem to think that being gay is also a mental illness.

I knew y'all would disagree but that's okay.

I'm thankful that I and my loved ones live in a country that doesn't persecute people who are different. I love my brother's attitude. He's a brutally honest man with a scathing sense of humor. He told the 2 realtors they recently worked with right up front that he's part of a gay couple, that he's old, and that he's rich. He tells them if they choose not to do business with him that's just fine because he'll have no trouble finding another who will be delighted. He worked with 2 great realtors as he and his partner bought retirement homes near Austin and in Chicago.

I don't approve of your brothers lifestyle (I am certain he wouldn't approve of mine), but I certainly admire him for his tolerance of others opinions and non-confrontational methods of dealing with them.

He sounds distinctly different from the Gaystapo movement; and I wish him happiness.
