She hunts and feeds the Big male / daddy lion so that he doesn't eat the kids or lion cubs and her if he gets hungry !! So , its a case of practical self preservation Sue . -------- thanks to the great white hunter / dentist from Minnesota the lioness is now free to find another 'nicer' male lion to feed and have kids/lion cubs with Sue .

Actually, there is more than one reason to mention Hitler along with this story.
Hitler was an animal lover.
Hitler's Germany was the first country on earth to have animal cruelty laws.
People close to Hitler said the only time he ever cried was when he heard of an animal being mistreated.
If he was around, Hitler would be chewing the carpet over Cecil.

I think you miss the point.

There are lots and lots of antelope, zebra and, for a different example, chickens.
They have to be numerous because, to some degree, that are supposed to become lion
(and whatever else) food. It presumably take a lot of antelope . But not all of
them or we'd have a much different problem.

It's not shocking or sad that they do.

What ... are they supposed to retire and sit on the porch with pics of their
grandchildren? Nobody dreamed of protecting the antelope, zebra or backyard chicken.


In the antelope's case: he was made, at least in part, to be a lion's dinner. But when crazymaker hunters
go of the reservation and kill the top of the food chain, it frustrates the natural order of things and
the whole evolutionary plan is kicked a little off kilter. The best and the brightest are there to live
long and prosper while the jackals, old age, disease, etc. kills off the old, weak and sick.

I understand you are making a little jest, but the fact is -- lions gotta live so antelope gotta die.

It's purty important that Cecil and all his friends get as much antelope as they need. And then,
by extension and paradoxically we need a certain amount of girl (we can get into that later)
lions to prepare 'lunch' for the pride.

Leave up to evolution to even the score. At least that's the way the plan has always been.

Zimbabwe, with astonishingly few lions, has a difficult time balancing the disorder of the system.

It ain't helpin' them much as it is. That's really the point in the Cecil story.

Since American hunters seem to be de facto in charge of legal hunting and poaching, it's way, way past time for us to go in and politely take some humble leadership of the whole thing. Can we be humble?

(Yea, I already know some wit is going to say that's what's going on now, has gone on, or will some time before the last lion dies, but it doesn't change anything. To that I say open the damn doors and let's kill 'em all. Then we can study about what comes next. Kinda like climate change ... burn the whole ecology down bec the Chinese and the Indians are gonna do it anyhow.
