That is how my first instructor taught us to do it. I've been pulled over a handful of times since then, and each time I was asked if I had a weapon with me. No other questions about my gun after that.

I have been stopped twice since I have had my concealed license. Both times I handed the officer my drivers and my concealed license at the same time. They both asked me where my firearm was, I told them and was advised to please do not reach around the middle console, where I had told them the gun was located BTW, no ticket for a driving infraction was issued either time.

That clip gave a very good reason, not to mention a gun to the officer as soon as he arrives at the window. Could be a rookie, nervous officer on the passanger side that only hears GUN...

A co-worker of mine did exactly that, and that is exactly what he got, a really nervous officer. When I heard him tell the story, I wondered why he handled it that way. I didn't blame the officer for his reaction at all.

I taught my kids early on what I felt like was a good procedure for night stops.
1. Engine off.
2. Window rolled down.
3. Overhead light on.
4. Both hands on the top of the steering column.
5. When asked for insurance card...Yes sir, it is in the glove box. May I open it?
6. Don't ask why he pulled you over. He will let you know in due course.

Good advice, I hardly ever hear of someone who followed those steps being shot by the police, probably wont either.
