Saying goodbye to an old friend

Yesterday Donna was coming home and an old guy turned left through three lanes of traffic and was still accelerating when he hit her, no skid marks. She believes he was still on the gas after hitting her and drove her car into a box truck waiting to turn.

A volunteer witness who was in the lane left of and behind Donna says she doesn't think the old guy even looked as he was turning past a line of cars stopped for a red light. The truck driver pretty much tells the same story, the old guy just accelerated through traffic without slowing down.

So her beloved Jeep is no more, The entire front end of the car is pushed over about 3 inches.

Not even a scratch on anyone, the old guy says he didn't see any other cars.One second later and the collision would have been square in the drivers door.

We have a kids' car we'll sell you; 2003 Saturn L300 with 170,000 miles and new tires. It runs great, but I don't trust it to go to North Carolina.

I don't need statistics. You don't take the keys away from teenagers/young adults. There comes a time when senior drivers become a menace, and you take their keys away. My grandfather drove through his garage door three times; and the back wall of his garage once. As insurance claims were never filed, those incidents were never part of insurance company statistics.

I would say the difference is that young drivers make mistakes that involve speed (more speed - more damage, more injury) and old drivers make mistakes of cognition and poor reflexes.

It's been my experience that most olds in front of me are bad drivers.
