How often do you replace your HVAC filter?

I go with one year, replacing at the start of heavy air-conditioning use. That's also what our Lennox guy recommends. HOWEVER, my wife opts for every six months. Says it's an allergy thing. What do you think?

It really depends, on what your thermostat is set at, and how many people and pets are coming in and out of your house. In the hot summer months when the system is running a lot, once a month is best.

I just dug out the literature on my Lennox heat pump. Nowhere in there does it suggest a time interval for replacing the filter. The Lennox guy comes once a year to service the unit and he brings a factory filter with him. In four years, we've never had a moment's trouble with the unit. The only question for me is the allergy thing. Would replacing the filter more often help contain allergens?

Depends upon the kind of filter your system requires/uses.
Our new system takes a filter that is about 5 inches in depth and the AC man told us it is replaced every 6 months.
So, that is what we do.

The old system had a much thinner filter and we replaced it every month or so.

Mine are of the 24x24 6" thickness type, I check them and generally replace them 4 times a year.

Neighbor is a dealer and installed mine a few years ago. He replaces his once a year.
I replaced mine 2 times a year. I live on an oil service road for I do it because of the additional dust in the air.

Every month summer and winter, every other month spring and fall. You can get a 3 pk at Home Depot for $7 plus change.

Our filter is included in the annual Lennox service package, which started out costing about $100. Last year it was about $125. This year... Who knows?
