RIP Prince
Re: RIP Prince
People know their own era..and always think it's the only one that matters.
So thought Glenn Miller's fans, Boddy Darin's fans, Rudy Valle's fans and Count Basie's fans.
Now they're just people that get googled a lot..sorry.

Django Rheinhardt? Otis Redding?
Good Lord, man..They're already there.
Unfortunately great talents like Otis Redding weren't around long enough to make a significant mark.

Re: RIP Prince
When he died, Elvis was a shadow of himself. He is a has been and was long before he died.
For the rest, you could hardly be more wrong. Two hundred (and more) years from now
Frank and Bing will NOT be has beens. They may have been forgotten but I doubt it.
They will always be 'forevers.' Mozart will be a forever forever. To suggest otherwise
is to make clear one does not know much about art.
We do not have the sound of those who were greats two- three- four hundred years ago,
but we have a lot of their music.

People like Elvis that have been dead 40 years are way beyond has beens.
For much of the country, they effectively never existed, and in 20 years the name will have thoroughly left the lexicon..probably sooner.
For much of the country, it's already "just some guy that really old and dead people listened to."
It's a tough racket..nobody lives forever.
Your great grandma thought Rudy Vallee would.

Bing Crosby? 200 hundred years from now?
Are you on drugs?
Try to find someone under 45 who even knows who the heck that is.

Re: RIP Prince
Glenn Miller is widely acknowledged as one of the greats.
He is not nor will he ever be a has been. He was a great success. His success does
not die with him ... whether you or I like it or not.
They may not be heard now (and this is not about any damned 'era') but that does
not make them 'has beens' Their accomplishments cannot be taken from them
nor do they diminish with age.
I am beginning to think you would stick a dirty thumb into La Giaconda's eye.

You're not worth my time on this.
You are reading all kinds of nonsense into where it doesn't exist.
I was raised on Glen Miller, Duke Ellington and all the big bands.
Never cared much for rock and roll.
But none of that has anything to do with anything you dolt.

Performers are quickly forgotten. It's composers who have a (tiny) chance of being timeless through their compositions. Even then, most people recognize their music, not their names (and rarely can put the two together).
Example: The William Tell Overture. How many can name the composer without Googling? I would wager few than 10% (and probably less than 1%), even though it is one of the most widely recognized tunes of our generation.
Re: RIP Prince
And Bing Crosby was pretty much a "Greatest Generation" era performer.
He was a favorite of my father, (who passed away in 1972.)

Re: RIP Prince
I had heard of Prince, but do not remember ever seeing him or hearing him. I just took a few minutes and pulled up Purple Rain and listened. I was not particularly impressed by his voice or the lyrics but the sound of the band was pretty good.

Re: RIP Prince
You are referencing those who have no appreciation for their culture and who
have no concern for the story of humanity. People who couldn't point out the
'northwest territories' on a historical map.
I am referencing those who are minimally intelligent and who care.
The 20th century is where film and der Bingle began. We know and love song called Greensleeves ... know how long that has been around?
How about Mozart. Bing has a great chance of being remembered as a beloved musician of the 20th Century Period who flourished in
the extraordinary democratic country of America. (maybe also Leonard Cohen!)
A probable advert for a streamed playlist two hundred years from now:
"Playlist for AD 2335 tonight will be Eine kleine Nachtmusic and The Bells of St. Mary's" And even if it does not, neither Bing nor
Mozart will be has beens. They will be honored by those who count.
To suggest that such a thing is not likely is to expose oneself as a true
idiot.
And, "No. I am not." I am also not an idiot. Further, saying 'How about Mozart.' is rhetorical.

The myriad of other composers of centuries past (that never had movies made about them) are known only to a shrinking number of enthusiasts.
Perhaps you are unaware, that symphonies..already thoroughly relying on tax dollars to exist..continue to disappear.
That is not from having too many fans.
People generally don't like that stuff.
And before you say something really dumb..no, that does not mean I'm insulting orchestral music.
I am a former member of a symphony, and have performed in many studio orchestras for television.

Re: RIP Prince
Crapple.
We have strayed from the point: The greats are never has beens.
That is what it means to be a great. And they are greats whether
remembered or not.
IF it happens that a great is unremembered, it is not because he or she is a
has been. (Though tastes do change and some are remembered some times
better than others depending.)
It is not because a great has somehow become a has been.
(What do you do with the symphony? Sweep?)

Absolutely. His "eight Presidents before George Washington" comment is not quite as off as it sounds, but it's still completely wrong in two ways. He must be referring to the U.S. under the Articles of Confederation. There were actually ten Presidents during the period of the Articles, but they were not a Chief Executive, so it's a somewhat meaningless assertion.
The Dick Gregory comment about manganese is pure looney-tunes, but I guess that's to be expected from someone who is..., well, looney-tunes.
