The Galveston Hurricane of 1900 took 8,000 lives.
That makes it the deadliest hurricane (by a wide margin) and deadliest natural disaster in US history.

It's surprising how often the Galveston hurricane is forgotten are minimized in discussions of natural disasters. All you have to do is look at the numbers to see its magnitude.

I've read that a lot of the devastation was caused by the fact there was little warning.
In those days people depended only on boats that had arrived ashore ahead of the storm.

I lived in Lafayette, La back in the 60's. A hurricane came through, I think it was hurricane Betsy. It was scary and exciting...mostly scary. It was very strange when the eye passed over.
