Kids in locked hot car... hammer solves problem

Postby Bob Of Burleson » Wed Jul 16, 2014 12:26 am

Two children freed from hot car by passerby
who smashed the windows with a hammer

By Justin Bank
The Washington Post

Two small children were freed from a hot car by passersby in a Houston suburb on Monday. The children were in the back seat of a black Jeep parked in a shopping center in Katy as temperatures hovered above 90 degrees, according to Houston TV station KHOU.

Gabriel Del Valle, who witnessed the event, told KHOU that he and other people nearby could hear the kids crying and decided to use a hammer to shatter the car window and get the kids out. “I mean you would understand,” Del Valle told KHOU. “It’s real hot.” After several minutes, the kids were freed and, KHOU reported, “appeared unharmed.”

Update: KHOU reported late Tuesday that addtional witnesses had stepped forward to say that the children’s mother had accidentally locked her keys in the car after shopping at a Postal+ store. The owner of that store also provided surveillance tape footage of the mother shopping with her children and then coming back without them, seemingly asking for help.

As temperatures rise in the summer months, mortal instances of children left in cars are back in the news. In Georgia, authorities are looking into whether a man left his child to die in a car on purpose, in order to collect life insurance.

Just last week, police in Connecticut say a 15-month-old boy died when he was left unattended. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that more than three dozen children die of hyperthermia in cars each year in the United States.

Interesting progression of this story.

Yesterday we saw a report from the person who filmed them hammering in the window........who said he didn't call police (why not, doofus?).
That report said the mother left them in the car to get a hair cut.........and when she came out she begged everyone not to call CPS/police on her.....

So........what is the REAL reason the kids were left in the car?

If I had locked my kid in the car, the police would be the first call I'd make.....in fact I once called police 'cause I had locked keys/purse in car.
I don't get why the mother and none of the bystanders wanted to call for help.

I'll admit it...I once locked my keys in the car with an infant in a carseat....my precious niece...in front of my son's elementary school. This was before we all had cell phones...I ran into the school and made a scene to ask them to call the police...the fire dept. responded with a tool to unlock the door. All was good within 10 minutes.

But to go into a store when you have a cell phone? Why? For God's sakes...call 911 and report that you can't get kids out of the car. You will get help...not a stranger with a hammer saving your kids and a CPS interview..
