Why are the Rangers so bad?

Rangers owners get the blame for this mess

By Mac Engel

His titles say “President, Baseball Operations/General Manager,” which is what Jon Daniels wanted. Like any employee, just because he wanted it does not mean it was going to happen.

Somebody above JD had to make those titles possible. And that is where we must begin, at the offices of Mr. Ray Davis and Mr. Bob Simpson, primary owners of your Texas Rangers professional baseball mess.

Some of this Rangers cowflop is on the two who sign the checks.

Mr. Randy Galloway recently stepped away from the golf course to assault his favorite punching bag — JD — on what is fast becoming Daniels’ worst season as this team’s GM since he took over in October 2005. Bravely, Randy said JD belongs in the Jerry Jones category of stupid.

Personally, I gave JD and Ron Washington a pass because of the injuries, the fact they do have a positive record and every so often stinkers happen.

Next season is when JD will be on the hook for the full Jerry treatment. I hated the additions of Prince Fielder or Shin-Soo Choo because of their seven-year contracts, and nothing on the horizon suggests this team is ready to overtake Oakland any time soon.

The biggest mistake JD made was trying to extend the Rangers’ championship window with cash rather than young talent. The biggest reason the Rangers were so good was not because of spending big but developing their young players who were hungry.

Would some of these moves have happened with Nolan Ryan as JD’s fun-governor? Nolan did sign off on trying to land Fielder three years ago when he was a free agent, he OK’d the $100 million addition of Yu Darvish, and didn’t stop the team from burying Elvis Andrus in so much money that has acted like a drag on his swing.

While The Curse of Nolan Ryan is debatable, any of the moves JD has made since The Express went to Houston also required the approval of his bosses — Ray & Bob.

Any team forced to use 50 players (including 12 starting pitchers) before the all-star break because of injuries is going to be bad.

Is it JD's fault Derek Holland tripped over his dog? Is it JD's fault Martin Perez blew out his elbow?

Don't use their crappy season to fire Washington. The injured players are not his fault and he has to work with the players JD sends him as fill-ins for now.

Didn't you ever wonder why Detroit wanted to get rid of Prince so much that they are paying 13 million of his salary this year? That was my first thought when the Rangers announced he was now a Ranger.

Elvis is a great example of how the Rangers give huge new long term contracts to players that have one good year. See Feldman, Kinsler Etc. None of them had good years after that new contract.

Whatever stupidity it was that allowed the Orioles to claim Darren O'Day on waivers is inexcusable malfeasance.

Do you see the contradiction? You bashed the Rangers for trading Kinsler for Prince in one paragraph, then bashed Kinsler in the next paragraph.

When both contracts are over, the Rangers will be the big winner in the Kinsler/Price trade.

Why? Jerry never gets a break due to injuries - ever. You're telling me the Rangers have 9 players worthy of playing in the Majors? Injuries happen, how good are your backups? NFL teams don't have a farm system to get players from, True they have a 53 man roster, but they also have violent collisions on every play.

We were told the Rangers have the best farm system and best prospects in baseball..... Odor is it? Profar looks like he may work, but he hasn't completed a season yet. Even if the pitchers were healthy - Harrison coming off back surgery was questionable. Lewis coming off hip surgery was questionable. Ogando has been hurt every season he's been a starter, he's a setup man. Holland? 3rd starter who was allowed to play freaking hockey. Romo had to give up golf! Prince? At least it got the cancer Kinsler out of here.

Wash is doing the best he can with what he's given - he has no input. We've seen that in JD's firing of bench coaches and hitting instructors. It's time people stop making excuses for JD.

That should have been "Kinsler/Prince trade."
