There's a slight difference between a plane that is broken up in flight by a missile and a plane that flies into the ground - probably at full throttle.
Ever see another airliner crash that was just a hole in the ground?

Yes..and worse.

The ValueJet plane went straight down into the Everglades..and just disappeared..not a trace of anything.

Hope they don't release information about American casualties before the President returns from his fundraiser in New York. Wouldn't want to spoil his evening.

Granted, a plane that is blown apart in the air will leave a large debris field. But does that mean, conversely, that a plane that crashes intact will leave none at all?

Of course, it’s still too early to say definitively what happened but this is a personal blog, not a newspaper article or a government report, so I have the space to vent and express what I think rather than what I know. So, here goes.

I believe the writer of that is on target, based on what I have heard.

The Russians have probably already shot the dummies that shot down the airliner to make sure that it does not happen again Nd for the embarrassment caused.

The Donetsk People’s Republic, where fighting between the rebelling southeastern Ukrainian regions self-defense forces and the National Guard and ADS forces loyal to the Pravy Sector continue, stated that it has no part in the incident and does not have weapons to bring down any airplane from the height at which commercial airliners fly.
A spokesperson for local self-defense forces reported that the plane was shot down by a missile, and that the missile was fired from air defenses operated by troops loyal to Kiev. Air defense systems had reportedly been set up in the region within-the last few days.

It's a question of motive. It was only a few hours until McCain began appearing all over TV demanding that we give the Nazis in Kiev more weapons to fight the "rebels". Why would the rebels shoot down a plane that would provide justification for the US to give Kiev weapons to use against them?

Whole nother matter. Doesn't take much to shoot em down when they are flying low and slow.

Mark Davis mentioned this morning that Malaysian Airlines has drawn the short straw to have TWO of its planes destroyed in air. Maybe this is a dumb question, but I'm just wondering what any airline is doing flying over Ukraine right now since it's pretty much a war zone. Shouldn't they have been flying around that hot mess?

What did this woman do to tick off Dick Cheney?

AP-In an almost incomprehensible twist of fate, an Australian woman who lost her brother in the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 learned on Friday that her stepdaughter was on the plane shot down over Ukraine.

Kaylene Mann's brother Rod Burrows and sister-in-law Mary Burrows were on board Flight 370 when it vanished in March. On Friday, Mann found out that her stepdaughter, Maree Rizk, was killed along with 297 others on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, which U.S. intelligence authorities believe was shot down by a surface-to-air missile.

"It's just brought everyone, everything back," said Greg Burrows, Mann's brother. "It's just ... ripped our guts again."

Burrows said his family was struggling to understand how they could be struck by such horrible luck on two separate occasions with the same airline.

"She just lost a brother and now a stepdaughter, so..." he said of his sister, his voice trailing off.

Rizk and her husband Albert, of Melbourne, were returning home from a four-week holiday in Europe, said Phil Lithgow, president of the Sunbury Football Club, with which the family was heavily involved. Albert, a real estate agent, was a member of the club's committee, Maree was a volunteer in the canteen and their son, James, plays on the club's team.

"They were very lovely people," Lithgow said. "You wouldn't hear a bad word about them — very generous with their time in the community, very community-minded, and just really very entertaining people to be with."

The club members planned to wear black armbands and observe a minute of silence to honor the Rizks at their game on Saturday, Lithgow said.

Despite the twin tragedies, Burrows said he holds nothing against Malaysia Airlines.

"Nobody could predict they were going to get shot down," he said. "That was out of their hands."

I read about 50 flights had already crossed the same airspace that day including Putin's plane returning to Moscow. It was up to each country whether they allowed that. The US had prohibited their airliners some time ago.
I have to think that a system sophisticated enough to track and shoot down aircraft at that altitude, have the ability to read their transponder and know what kind of a plane they are shooting at.

Not if the system is manned by half trained militants.
